Lilly Pillies dropping leaves healthy leaves

Postby ASPRILLA on January 12th, 2010, 7:33 am

Hi everyone, this is my 1st post, so hope someone could give some advice to a gardening beginner. I have planted 10 lilly pillys (hinterland gold) as a hedge and although new growth is occuring and new shoots are healthy looking, they all seem to drop the older leaves. any sort of wind or rain or even watering knocks them off. they are approcx 40cm high, but they are looking bare now from the bottom upward. Anyone have nay ideas about this? They are watered well, 1 time per week
Any tips would be great, thanks

Hi, Im also a beginner but here is my two cents worth. I recently had someone plant some Aussie Compact Lilly Pillies for me. I was told that I should water them every 3rd day (for about 3-5 minutes each, if using a hose) for approximately the first 12 weeks. So it sounds to me like you aren't watering yours enough.

Its important with a hedge that the bottom is wider than than the top. If light is not penetrating the leaves at the bottom they will die and drop off. This could be your problem. If those plants have been in longer than 18months water is not the issue. Also lilliy pilles are marketed as a 'hardy' plant but its not particularly. Its more of a trend at the moment like fashion. They tend to get overrun with disease and pests so watch out for that.

Regards.
