Transplanting a rose from the ground to a pot

Postby auds on August 2nd, 2009, 2:33 pm

Hi, my late grandfather gave me a standard rose for my 21st (10yrs ago). We have now sold our house and I want to take the rose with me to our rental property whilst our new house is being built. I can only find information about transplanting a rose into the ground not out of the ground and into a pot. Can someone please tell me what I need to do with the root system. I know how to prune my rose but not how to get it out of the ground unharmed or what to put in the pot to give it the best chances for survival...
Thanks in advance
Audrey :)

a simple rule i use when i've done similar to other plants is to prune as much foilage as possible use a big pot and dig as much root as you can to fit in the pot.no plant likes to be disturbed, but most plants fight for survival, so you just have to help it by minimising shock. also helps to do it when plants are dormant, or at minimal growth ie: winter
