Tree ferns

Could anyone tell me how to propagate please.I have been told to cut them off and replant the tops.I have 8 in my garden.

It depends on what type of tree fern it is. If its a rough tree fern (Cyathea australis) it cannot be cut down and re-planted. However if it is the soft tree fern (Dicksonia antartica) it can be cut and then replanted.

The difference between is in the base of the fronds

Soft tree fern: Smooth, hariy frond bases
Rough tree fern: Rough and bumpy frond bases
